Wildlife Refuge La Barqueta

Chiriquí, Panama

Barqueta Agrícola Beach, a wildlife refuge, is located in the southwestern region of Chiriquí province and is just a 25-minute drive from the city of David.

One of its attractions is its diverse vegetation. It features a mangrove area surrounding the estuaries in the northern part, with patches of forest on San Pedro Island and the higher part of the beach. The area includes marshes, grasslands, secondary vegetation, cultivated fields, improved pastures, fallow land, and paddocks.

The wildlife in the area is equally impressive, with mammals such as squirrel monkeys, white-faced capuchins, night monkeys, coatis, agoutis, ocelots, otters, weasels, and raccoons.

Bird enthusiasts will be delighted by the variety of bird species present, including the boat-billed heron, purple gallinule, snowy egret, great egret, and northern pintail.

As for reptiles, the area is home to several sea turtle species like the leatherback, green sea turtle, loggerhead, hawksbill, and olive ridley, in addition to various lizards and boa constrictors, among others.
