Is one of Panama's most biologically diverse protected areas.
Was designated a Protected Wetland by the Institute of Renewable Natural Resources, now the National Environmental Authority. This wetland is located in the province of Bocas del Toro, in the Changuinola district, and is part of the National System of Protected Areas.
This area serves as an ideal habitat for thousands of plant and animal species, with a special focus on two endangered species: manatees and sea turtles. Moreover, since 1998, this wetland has been part of the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve, along with International Friendship Park, Volcán Barú National Park, Volcán Lakes Wetland, Fortuna Forest Reserve, Bastimentos Island Marine Park, and Palo Seco Protected Forest.
This wetland features wetland environments influenced both by the sea and the rivers that flow through it, such as the Changuinola, San San, and Sixaola rivers.
From a geological perspective, it preserves peat deposits in the southeastern region and is immersed in a network of significant faults and fractures within the Panama microplate.
