Iguana Island

Los Santos, Panama

Isla Iguana is an island in the Panamanian province of Los Santos, which is part of the wildlife refuge in the area. The island is composed of intrusive basalt rocks, a result of underwater volcanic eruptions.

Its coasts are home to one of the main coral reefs in the Azuero and Santeño regions of the Pacific. The island covers 13 hectares of tropical dry rainforest, with an additional 40 hectares of coral. The coral reefs surrounding the island boast over 17 coral species and 347 fish species. This characteristic results in white sandy beaches, a product of coral skeleton erosion, and they are inhabited by a wide variety of invertebrates, especially crabs. One of the most important features of Isla Iguana is the permanent or migratory presence of cetaceans such as the humpback whale, although dolphins are also common, including the spotted Pacific dolphin and the bottlenose dolphin.
