Gamboa is the starting point of the Chagres River before entering Lake Gatún in the Panama Canal. At 165 square miles (425 square km), Lake Gatún is one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. On a boat you can visit several islands where you may be able to see white-faced capuchin and howler monkeys, as well as numerous bird species.
