Escudo de Veraguas, or Dekö in Ngäbere, is the name of a remote island in Panama, measuring 3 square kilometers, located in the Caribbean Sea. While its name might suggest that it belongs to the province of Veraguas, it falls under the jurisdiction of the province of Bocas del Toro and is situated about 20 miles from the Gulf of the Mosquitos.
It is distant enough from other islands and the mainland to have fostered the development of numerous species and subspecies found exclusively on this island. These include a subspecies of the passerine bird known as the Golden-collared Manakin, as well as a species of salamander and the endangered Three-toed Pygmy Sloth.
Largely uninhabited, the island has a few native settlements, while others are temporary and used by fishermen. The majority of the island remains in its natural state.
